revisiting this item. I encountered the problem again, and found a new unexpected resolution: I went through the usual checks: 1. CLOSE SKYPE. That's often a conflict for sound hungry software. Obviously close any media players. Then I realized where the conflict was: a folder was open, which as you know, can let me preview sound files, and as sound file was currently selected, the sound device was being held by the system for me to preview the sound file. I closed the folder, and presto, device available! Don't know how many times I've fought with this conflict and didn't check that! Another satisfying resolution, and also often unexpected, is the bitter Sum.
